The average person is expected to spend around 90 000 hours at work during their working life. 8 hours per day, 5 days a week, assuming 2 weeks off each year for good behaviour. This ignores travelling time, which could easily consume another 20 000 hours.
The average person thinks this is normal behaviour. Because their parents did it, and all their friends are doing it. Most importantly, because society expects it.
In return for the lives that they sell, piece by piece, month by month, they are rewarded with just enough cash to feed and clothe themselves and build a comfortable home where they can rest and regain enough strength to do it all again for another month.
The average person doesn’t mind this. The job is not their top priority. They put up with it in order to spend time with their friends, families, pets, and hobbies, in between, when they are not working. All they want is the illusion of safety and security that comes with working for a salary.
That’s life, they say. It’s the way the world works. But what if you were to throw yourself into your job, in fact turn it into a career? Work so hard, and so smart, and so well, that you could squeeze those 90 000 hours into 20 or 30 years instead of 45?
